Street Vendor & Domestic Worker Drive

Overview

The GNLU Legal Aid Clinic conducted legal awareness drives in the villages of Raysan, Koba and Kudasan as part of its initiative of engagement with street vendors and domestic workers. The drive focused on educating vendors about various governmental schemes and programs that they could benefit from, particularly those aimed at small businesses and street vendors.

Objective

The primary objective of the drive was to raise awareness among the targeted group about available government schemes and provide them assistance for procuring those benefits and further, to give legal guidance and aid for any other issues faced. The drive aimed to empower vendors and domestic workers by bridging the information gaps and helping them apply for schemes, particularly PM Samvidh schemes and schemes on acquisition of bank loans.

The GNLU Legal Services Committee has been set up in the year 2007 by way of Section 4(k) of the Legal Service Authorities Act, 1987 which reads as "Develop, in consultation with the Bar Council of India, programs for clinical legal education and promote guidance and supervise the establishment and working of legal services clinics in universities, law colleges and other institutions". The Legal Aid Cell (or committee, as is the practice now), established under statutory law provides assistance through a variety of methods, including traditional casework, summary advice, self-help, community legal education, community development and policy reform initiatives.
